Dr. David Sherer – About the Author

As an anesthesiologist, Dr. Sherer often contemplated the power doctors in that speciality have over their patients. They not only entrust them with their lives by allowing them to put them, in essence, into a medical controlled and reversible coma, but they also place themselves in a vulnerable position when being merely sedated for more minor surgeries. That got Dr. Sherer thinking about the things people reveal when they are under the influence of disinhibiting drugs: the secrets of a cheating spouse, the confessions of an embezzling businessman, the remorse of a person who has shoplifted. These thoughts got Dr. Sherer thinking: what if he could create a new work of fiction, where an anesthesiologist sedates a patient when other staff are temporarily out of the operating room, to garner confidential and normally privileged information and use that to his advantage. That’s exactly what Dr. Sherer has done in his debut novel Into the Ether. And what a delight it is to read it!
After his first book as a medical fiction writer, Dr. Sherer describes the process of writing fiction as opposed to writing nonfiction so much more creative and free. He says: “There is so much more room to allow the imagination and spirit to run wild. It’s not necessarily better than writing nonfiction - just different. And I feel that difference has shone through in the work. It is the capstone to a long-held desire of mine to create something great in the world of fiction. And I was able to use my medical background - an area of work clearly less endowed with the creative process - to accomplish it.” Now considered among critically lauded medical fiction authors, Dr. Sherer has planned a trilogy for the series. Two additional works, Index of Suspicion and Fever Break, are planned for future publication.
